The Girls by Lauren Ace and Jenny Lovlie is a gorgeous picture book and it’s well celebrated in our house by both of my girls. It was also a treat to see it being used in school a couple of weeks ago by a colleague friend who adored the story and it’s messages. She was telling me how she’d spent so much time with the girls in her class as they were totally absorbed with the story line.
The Girls is a timeless picture book celebrating kindness, strength and female friendships. The story is of four young girls; Sasha, Lottie, Alice and Leels who spend their days playing beneath the branches of an apple tree. As the tree grows, so do these young girls, into women. Each of the young girls is described by Ace with having particular skills and attributes making up their personalities. As the girls grow into women the story shares their secrets, their dreams, worries and their friendships grow stronger. Just as the tree grows and the roots grow firmer and stronger, so do the girls friendships.
Together with the gentle illustrations thoughtfully presented in such pretty colours by Jenny Lovlie this story is so lovingly put together and makes a delightful read with children of any age.
