Climate Change is becoming a huge topic for children to discuss nowadays, in the home and at school. I read a fabulous article in Lunch Lady (Issue 9) on How to Talk to Kids about Climate Change where they have brought together advice from educated specialists. It’s a great read and it connects such a monumental issue of climate change to make it far less worrying to a small child.
Climate change has been an agenda in my girls lives for a while now, and they are regularly talking about how we can help make small changes in our every day life and in our home. For example, we eat seasonally and I buy local and organic food when possible, we support small businesses, we have meat-free Mondays and as the liquid soap runs dry in the bathrooms, we’re changing out the plastic boxes for pretty coloured soaps. It’s the small things that will make big differences.
The girls have also been following Greta Thunberg’s talks and I was so pleased to see publishers Quarto Kids have represented her values and beliefs in a new picture book. Greta and the Giants is a perfect read for the young to be inspired by Greta’s work.
The story is about Greta who lives in a beautiful forest threatened by Giants. They are chopping down trees to make houses and towns and cities, when finally there is hardly any forest left. Greta comes up with an idea and the story continues.
It’s an inspiring picture book with an allegory evoking the tenacity of the current climate movement and there is a section in the back of the book informing readers about the real Greta and what they can do to help fight against the ‘Giants’.
