When I saw Corrine Averiss’ book called JOY, I couldn’t help but fall in love with it. With such a fun-loving cover and equally stunning illustrations inside, JOY really does measure up to its title.
This thoughtful story highlights the relationship one child has with her grandmother. As Fern sees that her Nanna has not been herself of late, she asks her mother what is happening. Realising the joy seems to have gone out of her Nanna’s life, Fern decides to fetch the joy back. She begins an inspiring journey that is guarenteered to make Nanna cheerful again.
As Fern takes her net and catching bag her journey begins and she tries to put the ‘bounce of the puppy’, the ‘chuckle of the baby’ and the ‘sparkle of the shimmery ripples’ into her bag. But it’s just no good. Instead she decides to sit quietly by her Nanna’s side and recalls her adventures of the day. The joy slowly and deeply is captured once again in her Nanna’s life.
Each double-page spread of this story is filled with the most illuminative illustrations, carefully detailed and appropriately coloured to totally immerse you into the story. Averiss truely captures the essence of happiness together with the kindess of intergenerational friendships.
