If there is only one book I urge you to purchase this holiday season it’s this one, Madame Badobedah. It is truely astounding!! It’s anigmatic and mysterious and hysterically fun. It’s absolutely everything a book should be made of. We adore Madame Badobedah and you will too!
Adventurous and rather curious Mabel lives in a hotel, The Mermaid Hotel, beside the sea and she loves to keep an eye on the comings and goings within it. One quiet morning a new guest came to stay who smelled of ‘old roses, spice and vanilla’ and her hair ‘was red and crunchy; a toffee apple without the stickiness’. (You see how good Dahl writes)! That visitor was Madame Badobedah and she brought with her what Mabel thought was an extraordinary secret and she stayed in ROOM 32.
Mabel very quickly decides Madame Badobedah is a supervillian! So with a combination of magnificent illustrations and a celebration of imagination, Dahl has me and my girls hooked from page one. We have not only read this book once this week but every single night. I shan’t spoil the story for you all but I shall say it’s a clever mix of warming friendships and colourful characters and we truely love it.
I equally loved watching this delightful Q & A with Sophie Dahl listening to her inspiration behind Madame Badobedah.
You can buy Madame Badobedah in any fabulous bookstore or online from the publishers, Walker Books. There is also an audiobook presented by Sophie Dahl herself. For a sneaky peak you can listen to it here.
Enjoy! (I know you shall)
