It really is a funny thing getting older and having older children. Babies and toddlers keep us so busy that we don’t have a lot of time to think, and though it is exhausting and exhilarating at the same time, it does have the benefit of distracting us from the realisation that we are getting older ourselves.
Having a teenager in the house is a bit less of a distraction. They are autonomous and crave independence — it is a wonderful thing, but it has confronted me with the truth that together with my children I am also growing up!
I am reading the book “There are no Grown ups” by my friend Pamela Druckerman and she manages to capsulate this moment of coming of age perfectly. Pamela is also the author of Bringing up Bébé aka French kids don’t throw food and I love the her self-deprecating style while she contemplates the changes in her life and the way the world reacts to her.
Here in France it is definitely the difference between being called “Madame” instead of “Mademoiselle” and it is also the difference between being addressed as “vous” instead of “tu”! It is also, as Pamela points out, the fact you get impatient when you are scrolling down to your year of birth on webpages and the fact that your kids shoe size is bigger than your own!
We are an interesting generation as we are growing older later than our parents. We shop in the same shops as our kids and often listen to the same music and are still aware of what is going on in contemporary culture. We feel young at heart! And yet, the wrinkles and the wisdom tell a different story!
Here is to becoming mature and not taking it too seriously!
