Our London ShopUp event is just around the corner — taking place in Shoreditch on June 9th and 10th! (Mark your diaries and don’t miss it!) So, with London on our minds, we’ve rounded up our favourite London-themed picture books. Whether you live in London, travel to London, or simply want to teach your children about one of the world’s greatest cities, it’s always a good idea to have a few London-themed books on your bookshelves. What a fun way to explore the city and visit some of its most well-known sites.

Here are our 12 of our favourite London picture books:

  1. Ruby Red Shoes Goes to London by Kate Knapp. We love the Ruby Red Shoes series, and this one is no exception. It’s so fun to see glimpses of our old city (red phone box, double decker bus, terraced houses) all beautifully illustrated by Australian author/illustrator Kate Knapp. — Courtney
  2. This is London by Miroslav Sasek. A must-have for any child’s library. We love the whole series of cities, but the London one is a favourite. A really nostalgic kind of book. –– Courtney and Vanessa
  3. Musgrove the Nanny of Notting Hill by Ilona Rodgers. A charming story about a girl called Hermione and her quirky nanny rat, Musgrove — taking place in my favourite London neighbourhood with references to streets and cafes I once frequented. — Courtney
  4. The Buildings that Made London by David Long. A tour of London’s most iconic buildings. A fascinating book which the whole family will enjoy. — Vanessa
  5. A Walk in London by Salvatore Rubbino. A girl and her mother spend a whirlwind day in London visiting all the iconic spots. We love this follow up story to his first one, A Walk in New York. — Courtney
  6. Paddington at the Palace by Michael Bond. No bookshelf is complete without Paddington and this is a trooper! –Vanessa
  7. The Queen’s Hat by Steve Antony. The queen’s hat is caught by the wind and is swirling around all of the sights of London. This is such a fun book! We always have such a giggle with this one. — Esther and Vanessa
  8. All Aboard the London Bus by Patricia Toht. We bought this book to read to Delia before traveling to London last December and it was a perfect introduction for her to some of London’s major landmarks. We both liked the rhythmic nature of the book, and the short poems about each sight (Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Tower of London etc.) impart just enough information. — Shannon
  9. Katie in London by James Mayhew. Again another lovely series of books and Mayhew manages to capture the heart and soul of London in this one. –Vanessa
  10. Madeline in London by Ludwig Bemelmans. The little Parisian visits London! We love the entire Madeline series, but this one, which combines our two dear cities, is a favourite. — Emilie
  11. My First London Taxi by Marion Billet. A great board book for yourger kids with moving wheels! You have to look for iconic images on each page… the lions in Trafalgar Square, etc! — Lara in London
  12. London for Children by Matteo Pericoli. This book is full to the brim with fascinating facts. The book is divided front to back in two secitions so you can read the North Bank, then trun the book over and read about the South Bank. I think most Londoners would find this book informative — not just children! –– Lara in London

Please share any favourites of yours we’ve left off the list. We’d love to hear!
