Quite often I’ll choose a novel for myself from the big kids section over something from the regular adult readers. This one, The Secret of Nightingale Wood by Lucy Strange is written for ten year olds plus (or that’s what amazon says anyway) and is such a rich, intense storyline that I managed to read it in less then a week. I could not put this one down. Personally it is a little too old for Helena to read (she’s just turned ten), only in that it’s rather spooky in places and she’s a very sensitive sleeper! I have to admit I was on the edge of the chair quite a few times with this one and the story line is so gripping I found myself rushing through to find out what happened next.
So the story goes that Henrietta has recently lost her elder brother, her Mother is so ill and her baby sister is taking up all of the attention of the nanny. Father has gone away to work so Henrietta is left to entertain herself all day long. She begins ‘seeing things’ around the house and in the woods and begins to fear the worse with her own health. Strange happenings begin occuring and the plot thickens. The story of friendship, love and family is so balanced and rather poetic. It’s a beautiful story which I recommend not just for older children but as a mama read too.
You can find The Secret of Nightingale Wood in all good booksellers and online on Amazon (UK) and (US).
